The Climate Justice Movement and Labor Unions

The climate justice movement is often said to be a threat to the working class. Workers are supposedly forced to defend their jobs and ways of life against radical economic transformation. But the climate crisis affects the working class more than anyone, and there is no a sustainable future without its contribution. We will be looking at historical examples of environmental and union activists joining forces.

Dekoloniserande aktivism. Vi kommer fokusera på hur dekoloniserande aktivism kan se ut i praktiken; hur dekoloniserar vi våra grupper och vad vi gör? Formatet är ett öppet samtal där ni som deltagare kommer vara med och tänka samt ställa frågor. Håller i workshopen gör vi; en samisk aktivist och två aktivister från Skogsupproret med erfarenheter av skog och urfolkskamp. Skogsupproret väljer ofta att lyfta kopplingarna mellan dagens extraktiva skogsbruk med pågående kolonisering av Sápmi/Sábme/Sábmie/Saepmie. Samtidigt är vi huvudsakligen från den icke-samiska majoriteten. Därför jobbar vi hela tiden på att samarbeta med och lyfta olika samiska perspektiv.

Samidoun Gothenburg, an autonomous local chapter of the international Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network is joining TCA to discuss Palestine from a radical left perspective. How can we, not the least in an environmental and climate context, understand the struggle for the liberation of Palestine? The discussion will touch on topics such as the prisoner movement as well as historical and contemporary left perspectives on the liberation of Palestine.

Automotive empires: Neocolonialism and the car industry.
While fuel prices are skyrocketing and public transport is in reality only usable in urban centers, the car industry has long since come up with the apparent solution: e-mobility. Almost noiseless and apparently emission-free cars are supposed to provide a remedy for the industry’s sales crisis as well as for the murderous consequences that automobility has on the climate.
In this talk we would like to discuss why this is not even half the truth. To do this, we we’ll look at the question of where and under what circumstances the raw materials necessary for the transformation of industry are obtained. We’ll then deal with the global division of labour and what is meant when economists talk about ”favourable production conditions” and how they have come about historically. And finally ask ourselves why German car capital in particular is looking at the African continent and what this has to do with the fact that diesel cars have to be brought to new markets. Because social contradictions can only last until someone puts an end to them, we’ll finally take a look at struggles against automotive capitalism that have already been waged and those that still need to be waged.

The climate transformation needs a planned economy. Ever wider layers of politicians seem to agree with the urgency of a rapid climate transformation. However, many of them aren’t really interested in actually doing much and all, while others really see the urgency, but believes the market will do what is necessary. What we really need, however, is a planned, rapid transformation to zero emissions of green house gases.

Jordens Vänner är en ideell förening och den svenska grenen av det internationella nätverket Friends of the Earth. Vårt internationella arbete bygger till stor del på partnersamarbeten, vi är inte en biståndsorganisation utan för, tillsammans med våra partners, en gemensam kamp med olika förutsättningar. Majoriteten av Jordens Vänners partnerorganisationer finns i Central- och Sydamerika och bland en rad andra frågor kämpar de för att skydda Amazonas regnskog. Workshopen kommer att diskutera situationer, strategier och metoder för skogskamp i Sydamerika. Hur hör våra kamper ihop? Vilka likheter och skillnader finns? Finns det något vi i en svensk kontext kan lära oss av?
